Cable Gland for Cables Entering Ex e & Ex i Equipment
Irrespective of the zone in which the selected cable gland is to be installed, it is essential that the cable gland is capable of maintaining the integrity of the equipment to which it is connected.
The following describes the minimum requirements for various different forms of equipment protection according to IEC 60079 standards.
Alternatively, view CMP’s Ex e & Ex i cable glands here
The Minimum Requirements for Increased Safety Type ‘e’ (Ex e) Cable Glands
• Thermal Endurance Tests – Variable temperatures according to material selection, determined by IEC 60079-0
• Cable Pull Out Resistance – Variable according to cable type selection and Cable Gland performance capabilities, including testing of selected sealing ring material, determined by IEC 60079-0
• Impact Resistance – 7J for Groups II & III (20J Group I)
• Ingress Protection Rating – IP54
• Cable Gland / Equipment interface seal is recommended
• Single Seal as a minimum
• 'Conditions of Use' often exist which must be observed.
• Users must also carefully follow IEC 60079-14 for selection, installation and initial inspection.
Whilst the minimum Ingress Protection (IP) rating required to achieve Ex e certification under IEC 60079-7 is IP54, it is essential that the Cable Gland is capable of maintaining the integrity of the equipment enclosure, which more often than not may have a higher rating.
The Minimum Requirements for Intrinsically Safe Equipment Type ‘i’ (Ex i) Cable Glands
• Cable Gland / Equipment interface seal is recommended
• 'Conditions of Use' often exist which must be observed
• Users must also carefully follow IEC 60079-14 for selection, installation and initial inspection.
There are no specific test conditions in IEC 60079-11 applicable to cable glands for Intrinsically Safe equipment Type ‘i’, however any cable glands selected must comply fully with the general requirements of IEC 60079-0.
